Greek prison officers on hunger strike

12 April 2012

The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) has sent a message of solidarity to the 11 members of the Executive of the Federation of Correctional Personnel Unions in Greece, OSYE, (member of ADEDY confederation) who are holding a hunger strike from Saturday 7 April to Friday 13th April.

This is the first time that the union has resorted to a hunger strike.

Their action is in protest at the dire overpopulation in all correctional facilities in Greece, the chronic understaffing and unpaid night and overtime work since 2010. EPSU demands that the weight of the crisis be borne by those that have caused it, not by public sector workers.

We hope that this protest will lead to a change of policy in the prison system in line with the European prison rules endorsed by all EU governments including Greece. Economic considerations can never justify the ill treatment of prisoners and staff.

Please send messages of solidarity to the union: osye@otenet.gr, with a copy to epsu@epsu.org.
