Irish take to the streets to protest bank bailout costs

Over 100,000 people joined street rallies organised by the Irish Congress of Trade Unions in cities across Ireland on 9th February to voice their anger at the huge cost of the Irish bank bailout. Protesters carried German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, and Finnish-language banners asking: “Is this fair? Five million Irish paying 42% of Europe’s bank debt.”

One thousand people demonstrating for a robin hood tax

On 22 January, 11 countries, including four of the biggest economies in Europe, agreed to implement a financial transactions tax. The new leader of the global union federation Public Services International, Rosa Pavanelli, welcomes this initiative: “Fair taxation is key to the equitable redistribution of wealth. We believe the funds raised from such a ‘Robin Hood Tax’ should be used to support sustainable jobs, tackle poverty and inequality, make public services such as healthcare accessible to all, and strengthen the global fight against climate change. An FTT will also help to curb runaway financial speculation.”

Rosa Pavanelli elected to lead Public Services International

Italian trade unionist Rosa Pavanelli has been elected as the new leader of the global union federation Public Services International, representing 20 million public service workers in 150 countries. Pavanelli says her vision is founded on “giving PSI new energy, and standing up for justice, solidarity, equality, a fairer and more sustainable world.”

The leadership vote took place during PSI’s 29th World Congress in Durban, South Africa (27-30 November 2012). Danish trade unionist Peter Waldorff had sought re-election as general secretary following one term in office.
