City of Brussels supports water as a Human Right

23 April 2012
On April 1st the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU) sponsored a European Citizens Initiative calling for water to be implemented as a Human Right.

The European Citizens Initiative is a new direct democracy tool introduced by the European Commission. It requires the collection of 1 million signatures in more than 7 European Members States.

The “Water is a Human Right Campaign” is an initiative of EPSU together with the European Anti-Poverty network (EAPN), European Environmental Bureau (EEB), European Public Health Association (EPHA) and Women in Europe for a common future (WEFC).

The Citizens Committee has also asked several public figures to give their support and there will be a call of European mayors to support water as a public good! In that sense Brussels, capital of Europe, is the launch of this initiative with the support of the mayor of Brussels Freddy Thielemans.

A press conference will take place on Tuesday 24 April at 15h at Rue du Chêne 10 - 1000 Brussels, Maison Patricienne, with Freddy Thielemans, Françoise Castex, MEP and Anne-Marie Perret, EPSU President and President of the Citizens Committee. After the press conference we will take a photo of the supporters of the Initiative in front of the Manneken Pis, the most symbolic fountain in Brussels!
