Australian union delegation visits Unison, UK

PSI affiliate unions from the UK and Australia got together on 4th October when a delegation from the Australian Services Union (ASU) visited UNISON North West's offices in Manchester, UK.

The delegation is examining the impact of privatisation and cuts within the public sector.
 
Mo Baines from the Association for Public Service Excellence APSE gave an overview of the government’s drive to increase private sector involvement in delivering local services.
 
Glen Williams from Sefton local government branch reported on a recent successful campaign around in-sourcing previously privatised services.
 
Pat Mc Donagh and Pete Banks from Manchester local government branch explained how the branch worked with the city to devise a positive redeployment policy to handle the huge financial cuts imposed by central government on the council.
 
The unions shared their views on the problems facing unions and public services in Australia and the UK.
