KCTU President sentenced to 5 years

04 July 2016
Seoul, Korea - court
On 4 July in Seoul, the court sentenced Mr Han, Sang-gyun, President of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), to imprisonment for a term of 5 years and an additional fine of 500,000 KRW (392 EUR).

The court decided all the measures taken by the police on 14 November 2015, including the prohibition of the Assembly, establishment of bus barricades, using the water cannon (except the targeted shooting against Mr. Baek), were legitimate. According to the judge, as the head of the KCTU, Mr Han, Sang-gyun is being held accountable and is accused of being the person responsible for all the actions done during the rally.

PSI strongly condemns this decision, which is contrary to fundamental labour and human rights and goes against the rules of a democratic society. PSI hopes that the court of appeal will reverse this verdict, safeguarding the free exercise of trade union rights and civil liberties.
