Dutch Parliament blocks contribution to the PPIAF

23 December 2011
The Dutch Parliament voted for an amendment by the Socialist Party to stop the contribution to the PPIAF, a fairly modest 1.2 million euros, but symbolically important.

The Socialist Party Member of Parliament got support for terminating the contribution of 1.2 million euros to the PPIAF. The PPIAF is an agency connected to the World Bank that provides technical assistance to developing countries to privatise their water supply. Since water is a public service, the Socialist Party Member of Parliament did not want the Netherlands to subsidise privatisation of water in poor countries.
