Solidarity with Guatemala

Brenda Marleni Estrada, trade union leader from Unsitragua Histórica, was killed in Guatemala City on Sunday June 19, after receiving five shots by unknown individuals. Brenda served for several years as part of the team of advisers and also occupied the sub-coordination of the Legal Council Commission in her union.

Congress stripped President Otto Pérez Molina of his immunity from prosecution and Judge Miguel Angel Gálvez immediately ordered his arrest. The judge is also dealing with the the case of "La Línea", a criminal gang alleged to have organised a customs fraud.

PSI welcomes the United States decision to push ahead with legal action to make Guatemala meet international standards on labour rights and working conditions.

PSI organised its annual regional conference, IAMREC, in Guatemala City from 24 to 28 March and followed up on its first international mission in August 2013, meeting with the President General Otto Perez Molina, the Minister of Health, the Deputy Minister of Labour, Ministry of Interior, the General Procurator for human rights, the EU Ambassador, US solidarity center and the UN High Commissioner’s Office for Human rights.
