PSI condemns horrific terrorist attack at Istanbul airport

30 June 2016
Public Services International stands in solidarity with the victims and families of the brutal shootings and bombings at Ataturk airport in Istanbul yesterday, 28th of June.

The attacks claimed over 40 lives and wounded more than 200 people including workers involved in security checks and ground staff.

“Attacks such as these strengthen our solidarity and show that we will never give in to terror,” says PSI General Secretary Rosa Pavanelli, speaking from a union conference in the USA.

The attacks come shortly after similar scenes in Brussels earlier this year claimed 32 innocent victims.

Ataturk airport is a key hub for European air traffic, with thousands of transport workers employed in a range of services. Just last week DISK Secretary General, was detained at Ataturk Airport by the Turkish authorities for supposedly ‘insulting the president.’

“Public Service workers all across the world are standing with our Turkish brothers and sisters who are facing unbearable scenes of violence,” Pavanelli added.
