Obituary - Maria Salomon, 1945-2013

10 June 2013
Maria Salomon
Maria Salomon, who worked for PSI from 1989 to 2008 as Press and Publicity Officer, died on 6th June 2013 at the age of 68.

Maria was a great colleague and a loyal and committed trade unionist. Before joining the PSI staff, she worked for the Swedish trade union SKTF, now known as Vision.

During her long career at PSI, Maria will be best remembered as the Editor of PSI's flagship magazine FOCUS on Public Services. At that time, FOCUS was published four times a year in six languages. Maria was not only the editor, she also did the layout, chose the images, and oversaw the whole production process.

Maria was also very active in the PSI staff trade union. Her strong character meant that her voice was always heard and she defended unionists everywhere, from her colleagues at the PSI secretariat to PSI members in all areas of the world, with the same determination.

In 2000, Maria moved to Brittany, where she continued to work part-time for PSI. She loved the old French house and garden that she shared with her partner, Mike Waghorne, who was PSI Assistant General Secretary until he retired in 2007.

Maria retired in 2008 and she and Mike enjoyed a peaceful life in Brittany. She is survived by Mike, her children Jacob and Rebecka and her grandson, to whom we extend our sincere condolences.
