Solidaridad con Guatemala

La violación de la libertad sindical en Guatemala es endémica. En los últimos años más de 80 líderes sindicales han sido asesinados.

El sistema de control de normas de la OIT viene examinando la situación de la libertad sindical en el país desde hace muchos años, pero el progreso alcanzado es limitado. A raíz de ello, delegados trabajadores presentaron una Queja durante la Conferencia Internacional del Trabajo de 2012. El Departamento de Trabajo de los Estados Unidos de América llegó a conclusiones similares bajo el mecanismo de revisión de la cláusula laboral del Tratado de Libre Comercio entre los Estados Unidos, América Central y República Dominicana (CAFTA-DR). Distintos gobiernos de Guatemala han prometido hacer frente al problema y remediarlo, siendo la Hoja de Ruta de 2013 la última de estas iniciativas.

Misiones de la ISP han visitado Guatemala en 2013, 2014, 2016 y 2017, al mismo tiempo que el Grupo Coordinador de la ISP fue creado en el país. El Grupo ha estado haciendo campaña para fortalecer el movimiento sindical y liderando los esfuerzos para lograr avances significativos en materia de libertad sindical.

In Guatemala, more than 50 trade unionists, most of them public sector workers, have been murdered in the last three years alone. In addition, numerous cases of torture, kidnappings, raids and death threats have created a culture of fear and violence.

Convened by the Trade Union Confederation of Workers of the Americas (CSA/TUCA), the Day of Action for Guatemala against the murder of trade unionists and impunity met on Friday 17 May, dozens of militants across the country's consulate in Sao Paulo to end of barbarism against the workers.

Voices of the living and the dead cry out for justice in Guatemala

Two women trade unionists, Santa Alvarado, member of PSI affiliate SNTSG, and Kira Zulueta Enriquez Mena, have been brutally murdered in two separate incidents in Guatemala. These follow on the murder of Carlos Hernández Mendoza, SNTSG union leader shot dead at 8:30 am on 8 March 2013 by two men on a motorcycle. Some five other members of SNTSG were also murdered in the last year as were several civil society activists, including agrarian reform and indigenous right activists.
