Young workers

Young people must have the opportunity for decent jobs. Research consistently shows that young men and women are often marginalised. They must overcome more barriers than adults to secure decent employment. Worldwide, young people are three and a half times more likely to be unemployed. Steps must be taken to ensure that young people have access to education, training, and economic opportunities.

Around 40 participants attended a Pan-European Regional Council (PERC) Youth Committee Conference on Migration on 10-11 September. The meeting was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on the invitation of the Azeri trade union confederation AHIK. Public Services International was represented by Cédric Dépollier, Young Workers’ Facilitator.

Caribbean young workers solidarity visit to Haïti

A delegation of young workers from PSI’s affiliates in the Caribbean will pay a solidarity visit to young workers of the CTSP Haïti during the period October 16 to 20.

The PSI regional young workers’ committee for Inter-America was held in Guatemala City from 24 to 25 March 2014. The members drew up their regional work plans for the following year, giving priority to decent work and employment issues.

The future of trade unions depends on organising young workers. Unions must address the interests and concerns of these workers by strengthening young workers' networks. PSI Southeast Asia and the Philippines young workers' network jointly organised a one-day workshop on "young workers and trade union organising" in Manila, Philippines on 13 March 2014.

Future driven: We too have a dream!

In November 2011, three trade union activists from St Lucia, Bermuda and Jamaica started what has become for them a long-term commitment to help build a stronger, sustainable public sector trade union movement in the Caribbean. With eyes focussed on the future, they recognised that in the absence of a vibrant, credible, public sector trade union movement – relevant to the 21st century - fighting the attacks on public services and public service sector workers would be even harder. They decided to stoke the fires and ignite a conversation on trade union renewal.
