Precarious work

The growing trend to part-time, temporary or on-call work affects the most vulnerable workers in society. They are the first to be laid off. They can’t count on getting enough hours of work to pay the bills. For them and their families, precarious work means a precarious existence. PSI and its affiliates world-wide support initiatives to replace precarious work with decent, family supporting jobs.

Ukranian unions celebrate World Day for Decent Work

On 7th October, Ukrainian trade unions, along with their counterparts from other countries, celebrated the World Day for Decent Work. The Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine (FPU) marked this day by picketing the buildings of the central authorities in Kiev.

ILO Tripartite Technical meeting adopts the General Principles and Operational Guidelines on Recruitment

The Tripartite Technical Meeting of Experts to Develop Guidance on Fair Recruitment held at the ILO in Geneva on 5-7 September adopted the General Principles and Operational Guidelines on Recruitment that will be submitted for approval by the ILO Governing Body in November.

Global trade union movement condemns unpaid internships, calls on UN to change policy

In the lead up to International Youth Day, PSI joins NGOs and unions from around the world in calling for an end to unpaid internships. A growing resistance to the use of unpaid interns has led to the formation of a number of interns’ rights organisations such as the Fair Internship Initiative in Geneva and New York as well as the “We Pay Our Interns" coalition, a Geneva-based association of NGOs which commit to a charter on interns’ rights and lobby other employers to do the same.

The countdown for Habitat III - the UN conference that is expected to set out the new guidelines for urban policies - has begun. The ‘United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development ’ – as it is officially called - will take place in Quito, Ecuador, 17 – 20 October 2016.

All Pakistan Labour Federation condemns the deaths of mine workers and demands judicial inquiry

At least 10 workers were killed and 30 were seriously injured at Al-Hussaini Coal Mine, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. According to APLF, 65 workers were inside the mine when it collapsed due to torrential rains.

Looking back at 2008 the one word that comes to mind is CHANGE. We saw a dramatic change in the global economy, it was the keyword in the US election and we initiated changes in PSI.
