Voices of the living and the dead cry out for justice in Guatemala

Two women trade unionists, Santa Alvarado, member of PSI affiliate SNTSG, and Kira Zulueta Enriquez Mena, have been brutally murdered in two separate incidents in Guatemala. These follow on the murder of Carlos Hernández Mendoza, SNTSG union leader shot dead at 8:30 am on 8 March 2013 by two men on a motorcycle. Some five other members of SNTSG were also murdered in the last year as were several civil society activists, including agrarian reform and indigenous right activists.

Sub‐regional Women’s Advisory Committee (SUBWOC) for the Caribbean

The Sub‐regional Women’s Advisory Committee (SUBWOC) meets on the day preceding the SUBRAC meeting and comprises the women representatives attending the SUBRAC meeting. The chair is the Caribbean Women’s Titular. The SUBWOC meets annually. In accordance with PSI’s constitution, the number of representatives attending the SUBWOC meeting must be at least 50% of the number of representatives attending the SUBRAC meeting.

Sub‐regional Advisory Committee (SUBRAC) for the Caribbean

The Caribbean Sub‐regional Advisory Committee (SUBRAC) meets annually. The SUBRAC is a PSI advisory body comprising representatives from affiliates who “facilitate the consultation process at sub‐regional level on policy issues and work programme implementation, and who participate in exchange and dialogue on issues relevant to PSI affiliates.”

Protest against the dismissals and repression of workers in Paraguay

On Thursday 27 September, PSI affiliate members joined with SEIU/UNI members for a protest in New York to draw attention to the dismissals and repression of public and private sector workers in Paraguay, since the new government took power in a coup.
