Energy

Reliable electricity improves lives and supports economic development. Just ask anyone who gathers wood to cook. Private corporations – motivated by profit – have frequently failed to expand electrical services to those who need it most. They also charge all the market will bear. Public enterprises – motivated by serving the public interest – are better placed to provide clean, affordable energy.

Asia-Pacific workers demand an end to savage attack on Exxon/UGL workers

Exxon/UGL workers in Australia have been on strike for over a year now, taking a stand against an employer that has savagely attacked the rights of their workforce. PSI and BWI support these workers demanding that the Government #ChangeTheRules to make the behaviour of Exxon/UGL illegal.

Renegotiated Global Framework Agreement with EDF Group enters into force

On 19 June, national trade union federations representing a majority of EDF Group workers affiliated to PSI and IndustriAll completed the signature of the renewed Global Framework Agreement on Corporate Social Responsibility with EDF Group, which entered in full force as of 21 June for a 4-year term.

Power employees in India to hold nationwide strike against privatisation bill

In its National Convention held in New Delhi, on 8 June, the Indian National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees & Engineers (NCCOEEE) decided to call for a nationwide power strike on 7 Dec this year to protest against the Electricity (Amendment) bill 2014. This bill seeks to extend privatisation to the distribution of electricity.

RWANDA: Illegally dismissed SYPELGAZ trade union members to return to court on June 4

PSI affiliate SYPELGAZ (Trade Union for Energy, Water and Sanitation in Rwanda) has been in court since May 2016, to demand for proper compensation of its five illegally dismissed Union Executive Committee Members and various other longtime denied labor related rights. After hearing explanations from both sides, the Court has deferred further pronouncements on the case to June 4.

PSI affiliate suspects fishy deal following announcement of Meralco Consortium as new manager of electricity in Ghana

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), a PSI affiliate in Ghana, is accusing the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) and the government of Ghana of intentionally excluding them from the Evaluation Panel during the last round of negotiations that led to the selection of the concessionaire, Meralco Consortium, a Philippines firm, to manage the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
