Route of Shame 2014 short

The Route of Shame is a solidarity action organized by Public Services International, calling for the right to strike and shaming countries that violate workers' rights. On 4th June 2014, the second edition of The Route of Shame brought together trade unionists from all over the world and all sectors in Geneva and in Guatemala, Buenos Aires, Paraguay, Sao Paolo, Panama,Tokyo, Indonesia, Santiago de Chile, Lima and other cities (more updates soon).

Led by members of the global union federation Public Services International (PSI), trade union leaders from around the world will join in a ‘Route of Shame’ bicycle ride Wednesday 4 June and visit missions and embassies in Geneva, Switzerland to draw attention to countries which consistently violate workers’ rights. In other cities around the world, PSI affiliates are organizing similar actions.

UN staff celebrate rights victory

PSI has received a letter from Ian Richards, Vice-President of the United Nations Staff-Management Committee and President of the Coordinating Committee of International Staff Unions and Associations. He tells us of the successful outcome of PSI's action in September 2013, with a protet letter to UN Secretary Ban Ki-Moon and a strong declaration from members of PSI's Steering Committee. We have reproduced here the contents of the letter from Ian Richards:

Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)

International trade agreements such as the TPP are currently being fast-tracked and negotiated in secrecy. These agreements undermine local and national government decision-making power and increase corporate access to public services resulting in the privatization of critical public services. PSI is working with global union federations, affiliated unions, and civil society allies who oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) being negotiated in the Asia Pacific Region.
