ImageHealth is increasingly recognized not just as a social issue and an individual right but as impacting directly on productivity and economic growth. Health and education are the pillars of human resource capacity and development. Health system strengthening is one of the main challenges of our time.
In many countries the largest single employer in the public sector is the health service. In PSI the largest single group of members are health workers - over the last five years they have accounted for fifty per cent of all new members. There are now 230 affiliated unions representing health workers, with approximately 7 million members, out of a total of 630 affiliates.

Hospital cleaners "worth more to society" than bankers
The studay, carried out by think tank the New Economics Foundation, says hospital cleaners create £10 of value for every £1 they are paid. It claims bankers are a drain on the country because of the damage they caused to the global economy.

PSI statement on World AIDS Day 2009
The 7 million health care workers in 154 countries represented by PSI, are keenly aware of the human impact of the AIDS epidemic. We are also aware of the tremendous burden it places on the capacity of health systems where our members work. Our members are in the frontlines of the fight against AIDS, and we are therefore deeply vested in ensuring that efforts to deal with the epidemic are as effective as they can be.

Violence in the Health Sector
The prevalence of workplace violence continues to rise in the health sector, as pressure mounts on the capacity of health systems to provide adequate services to patients and inadequate staffing levels leave health personnel more vulnerable to physical attacks. PSI has joined with other international organisations in co-sponsoring a second international conference on 27-29 October, 2010 in Amsterdam, where all stakeholders can collectively discuss the problem of violence and safety in the health care sector.

PSI calls for renewed focus on prevention against HIV/AIDS
During a meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, PSI’s general secretary Peter Waldorff called for more investment on prevention against HIV/AIDS. “The number of people infected with HIV is rising and yet we see a decline in prevention programmes. We must renew our efforts in effective prevention actions," says Waldorff.

Healthcare costs impoverish 150m worldwide
At least 150 million people worldwide suffer financial catastrophe each year and 100 million are pushed under the poverty level simply because they need to pay for health services, according to new World Health Organization (WHO) research.

Health care: Ownership makes a difference
For-profit nursing homes and hospitals, on average, provide a lower quality of care than their non-profit peers. This conclusion is the result of a study published in the journal Health Affairs 4-2006.

Failing health systems in Eastern Europe
All across Eastern Europe, health services plunged into crisis in the 1990s. Facilities may have been limited beforehand, and the system of healthcare in need of modernisation. But steep cuts in budgets, cuts in training and investment and, in some cases, official disinterest, created a pervasive system failure that has had terrible consequences, for patients and their families, for communities, and for those who have been required to work in the many parts of health services.

Training manual against workplace violence
This new manual has been jointly produced by PSI, the ILO, WHO and ICN. It is the result of continuing work on the joint project to counter workplace violence in the health sector. The Framework Guidelines were agreed three years ago and distributed to all PSI affiliates in the health sector. The training manual has been developed over the last year, including pilot testing in South Africa, and is now ready for use in a health sector training environment. As with all such materials it can be adapted for use in different national settings.

Final Report on Migration
This important report of first hand research was conducted by PSI affiliated organisations in the health sector in 13 countries around the world. The survey reveals the stark choices that health workers must face as they contemplate leaving their country and families to move to work abroad.
