On 23 June 2008, PSI marked the first Public Service Day with the launch of a resource toolkit for affiliates. Together with Oxfam International and Education International, PSI also called on governments to increase funding for essential public services.
Union representatives from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and the Palestinian Territories recently attended a workshop in Beirut to share campaigning experiences. This was just one step in a long journey towards union independence.
On a recent visit to Colombia, four Canadian trade union leaders confirmed their opposition to the Canada–Colombia free trade agreement.
Coinciding with the official G8 summit in Hokkaido, Japan, an alternative summit focused on issues ignored by world leaders. PSI Regional Secretary Katsuhiko Sato and Public Services Advocacy Officer Svend Robinson took the lead in calling for quality public services.
At the recent AIDS 2008 conference, PSI representatives made the case that ensuring protection for members should be an integral part of efforts to deal with the epidemic.
When Juliet Young felt the needle puncture her skin, she experienced the same fear that is felt by thousands of health workers worldwide who sustain needlestick injuries.
The Hungarian electricity industry, which employs around 18,000 workers, was privatised in 1995, with investors including multinationals E.ON, RWE and EDF, and other private companies. However, the basic network, a nuclear power station and some other companies remain in state ownership under the Hungarian Power Companies Ltd (MVM). A bilateral electricity forum has been in place since 1994, where the Association of Electric Energy Companies (VTMSZ) represents 80% of employers, and three trade unions negotiate on behalf of employees.
Women trade unionists from all over Africa gathered at a PSI workshop in Durban, South Africa, on 29–31 June 2008, to share their experiences working with the Water, Women and Workers campaign.
At the PSI World Women’s Committee meeting in Brussels, Belgium, in May 2008, the participants discussed PSI’s work to promote gender equality and enhance women’s professional position.
